The Liberals: a Novel
Craig, a navy veteran, elite college grad and former congressional staffer now in his mid-thirties, returns to D.C. from sensitive, but not entirely secret diplomatic work in Central Asia. Although it has only been a year, he tries to resume his former life but feels like an alien impersonator. Anomic, disjointed, it is as though time has sped up, and every facet of Craig’s world has been altered somehow; is manufactured, now; shallow. The premises of American life that inspired his service and sacrifice are shifting under his feet. But has the country changed, or has Craig? Torn between two increasingly divergent sets of values and commitments, he finds himself in a dilemma with profound political and moral implications.
